It's kind of funny that this realization came today, as I actually spent some downtime today writing notes about my Imprisoned Guest and Dragon Tattoo thoughts for posting tonight. However, it turns out that it's time for me to bow out of the club, so I'm just going to shelf them. Imprisoned Guest isn't even in the communal headspace anymore anyway.A number of our last few books, both fiction and non-fiction, have included themes of rape, sexual abuse and violence. I'm just not in a resilient enough headspace to enjoy the kinds of books that other people are suggesting. It's not a problem that /you/ guys want to, but I'm going to stop reading along.Besides, work has eaten me so hard that I've done little more than read the books and other peoples' commentary. The rest of you will hardly notice that I'm gone. :)See you around, I'm sure.
Oh hon, I'm really sorry this has gone that way. It occurs to me, suddenly, that I can't think of anything we have read that hasn't involved that sort of thing in some way. Ugh, now I feel awful. Do you want to just pop back in when we get to something that's less problematic? You don't have to read everything, really.
Midnight Never Come didn't. And anaka is right. You can always just stay with us and skip out completely on the books you don't want to read. No one will hold it against you at all. ::nods::Edited at 2010-05-01 02:49 am (UTC)
I'm not upset at all, and it's not been 100% of the books, but it's definitely been a theme lately. I actually figured that people less sensitive to the topic had possibly not even noticed--I certainly didn't think it was a Deliberate Plot(tm).Between work being so busy and the books being a little difficult on my tranquility, I just decided it was easier to bow out. But there's nothing any more personal in that decision than in my absolute boycott of horror movies--honest! :)Keep reading!
Well, if you ever want to come back in, please do. I'm taking this month off because I'm moving and trying to write a humongous paper and finish school and whatnot, and I think my head might explode. You're welcome if it ever becomes something you want to do again, really.
Other commitments kept me from participating the last few months, but I've kept my eye on the community here and there. This certainly isn't an all or nothing sort of club.
Considering that we've got 25 members and most of the traffic is from less than 10, yeah, I'd say so. :)
